23. Recently completed a Bachelors of Creative Arts Honours. Four years in Melbourne and now in Europe (Switzerland, specifically). Still Malaysian. The ‘y’ in my name is pronounced like an ‘h’.
When I was five, I fell a little bit in love with the optometrist that fitted me with my first pair of glasses, and so my first ambition became wanting to be an eye doctor. I spent my childhood filling up A3 sheets with mermaids and crudely drawn floor plans of my bedroom, and my dad told me I should be an artist. In high school I wrote *NSYNC fanfiction; somewhere along the way, I thought being an architect would be the perfect combination of “arty” and “professional”. I took a Diploma in Mass Communications after I left high school because I wanted to do journalism, which seemed like a legitimate way to write and live.
Sometime after I turned 18, around the time I had to do an internship with a newspaper, I decided I wanted to write for no one else but me, and that was fine. This blog is the latest in a line of many, and I neglect it a lot more than my 17 year old self would. In Novembers, it lights up as I participate in yet another year of NaBloPoMo. I write elsewhere, in bits and pieces, but this place is a furnished room I like coming back to every once in a while.
The URL of my blog “Fiddler’s Green” is a reference to a character in the Neil Gaiman series ‘Sandman‘. Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite authors. According to the Sandman characters Wikipedia page, Fiddler’s Green is
a place in the Dreaming which all travellers (specifically sailors) apparently dream of someday finding. It sometimes likes to take human form and go wandering, using the alias Gilbert during one of these trips. His most common form is as a kind, portly man who strongly resembles G. K. Chesterton.
